The Shift in Social Media: Is Instagram Dying or Evolving?

by | Nov 10, 2023 | MAD NEWS

Instagram, once the darling of the social media world, is now facing questions about its future and we are all wondering ‘is Instagram dying’. We are all long-time users and observers of Instagram; but here at Madhouse, we have closely followed its trajectory and the changes it has undergone. As a leading creative agency offering social media marketing and PPC services across the UK, we have seen a rapid decline in engagement across the platform.

Could this be a turning point in the digital sector?

Do we need to step away from including Instagram in our marketing strategies?

Well, the answer to these questions isn’t that simple.

In this article, we will explore the signs that Instagram may be declining, the evolution of the platform, and the perspectives of users, businesses, and influencers on its future. We will also discuss strategies for adapting to Instagram’s changes and the role of emerging platforms in the social media landscape.

The Rise of Instagram

Instagram burst onto the social media scene in 2010, quickly gaining popularity for its focus on visual content. Its user-friendly interface and emphasis on photo and video sharing made it a hit among individuals and businesses alike. With the introduction of features like Stories and IGTV, Instagram continued to innovate, keeping its user base engaged and expanding.

The platform’s success was further amplified when it was acquired by Facebook in 2012, providing it with the resources and infrastructure to grow even more. The platform’s algorithmic feed and targeted advertising made it easy to find content that resonated with the masses, and people eagerly embraced the various updates and new features that Instagram introduced over the years.

However, as Instagram’s user base continued to grow, concerns started to emerge about the platform’s impact on mental health, its approach to privacy and data security, and the prevalence of fake accounts and bots. These issues, combined with changes to the platform’s algorithm that affected content visibility and engagement, led to a growing sense of unease among users and businesses.

Signs that Instagram may be declining

The signs that Instagram may be declining are becoming increasingly evident.

  1. No New Users: One of the most significant indicators is the plateauing of user growth and engagement. While Instagram still boasts a massive user base, the rate of new user sign-ups has slowed, and existing users are spending less time on the platform. This shift in user behaviour is a red flag for any social media platform, as sustained engagement is crucial for long-term success.
  • Angry Users: The increasing dissatisfaction among content creators and influencers is another concerning trend. Many have voiced their frustration with the platform’s algorithm changes, which have negatively impacted their reach and ability to connect with their audiences. The rise of alternative platforms like TikTok and Clubhouse has also drawn creators away from Instagram, further diminishing its appeal as the go-to platform for content creation and influencer marketing.
  • Too Many Fake Accounts: The proliferation of fake accounts, bots, and inauthentic engagement has tarnished Instagram’s reputation as a trustworthy and reliable platform. The prevalence of fake followers and engagement metrics has cast doubt on the authenticity of interactions on the platform, leading to a loss of trust among users and advertisers.

The Evolution of Instagram

In response to these challenges, Instagram has been evolving in an effort to revitalise the platform and regain the trust of its users and content creators.

  1. Short From Video: One of the most notable changes has been the introduction of new features aimed at enhancing user experience and fostering genuine connections. The emphasis on Reels, a short-form video format, is a clear response to the rise of TikTok, and the platform’s continued investment in IGTV and live video demonstrates its commitment to providing diverse content formats for users and creators.
  • Stricter Policies: Instagram has also taken steps to address concerns about privacy and data security, implementing stricter measures to combat fake accounts and inauthentic engagement. The platform’s efforts to promote transparency and authenticity are evident in the introduction of features like the “About This Account” tool, which provides users with insights into the authenticity of accounts with large followings.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: Instagram’s collaboration with creators and influencers through initiatives like Creator Week and the monetisation of IGTV is designed to strengthen its partnership with the individuals who drive content and engagement on the platform. By providing opportunities for creators to monetise their content and connect with their audiences, Instagram aims to retain top talent and revitalise its content ecosystem.

Instagram’s response to challenges

In response to the challenges it faces, Instagram has implemented several changes aimed at addressing the concerns of its user base and content creators.

  1. Pushing Family-Friendly Content: The platform has made significant updates to its algorithm to prioritise content from friends and family, as well as posts that spark meaningful interactions. This shift towards authentic and engaging content is a direct response to the criticisms levelled at the platform for promoting superficial and inauthentic content.
  • Cracking Down On Misinformation: Instagram has ramped up its efforts to combat misinformation and harmful content, introducing features to flag and remove false or misleading information. The platform’s commitment to creating a safer and more informative environment for its users is evident in its collaboration with fact-checking organisations and the implementation of tools to empower users to control the content they see.
  • Shop Till You Drop: Instagram’s response to the challenges it faces also includes a renewed focus on e-commerce and shopping experiences. With the introduction of features like Instagram Checkout and the expansion of shoppable posts, the platform is positioning itself as a hub for discovery and commerce, leveraging its visual nature to enhance the shopping experience for users and businesses.

User perspective on Instagram’s future

We have all observed a shift in the way people interact with the platform, honestly, we are sick of seeing influencers all the time!  Many users, us included, have become more selective about the content we engage with, seeking out authentic and meaningful connections while filtering out the noise and superficiality that can often dominate social media feeds.

The changing landscape of social media and the emergence of new platforms have provided users with alternative spaces to express themselves and connect with like-minded individuals, leading to a diversification of online communities and interactions.

While Instagram still holds value as a platform for visual storytelling and community engagement, its future success will depend on its ability to adapt to the evolving needs and preferences of its user base. The platform’s response to the challenges it faces will play a crucial role in shaping its future, as users continue to seek out platforms that prioritise authenticity, meaningful connections, and user empowerment.

The impact on businesses and influencers

The evolving landscape of Instagram has had a significant impact on businesses and influencers who rely on the platform for marketing and monetisation. The changes to Instagram’s algorithm and the rise of competing platforms have forced businesses and influencers to reassess their strategies and adapt to the new reality of social media marketing.

For businesses, the declining organic reach and engagement on Instagram have necessitated a shift towards paid advertising and influencer partnerships to maintain visibility and reach their target audiences.

The platform’s emphasis on e-commerce and shoppable features presents new opportunities for businesses to drive sales and conversions, but it also requires them to invest in creating compelling and authentic content that resonates with users.

Similarly, influencers have had to pivot their content strategies and explore alternative platforms to diversify their online presence and reach. The allure of platforms like TikTok, with its rapidly growing user base and emphasis on creativity, has drawn influencers away from Instagram, prompting them to experiment with new formats and content styles to stay relevant and engage their followers.

Strategies for adapting to Instagram’s changes

As Instagram continues to evolve, businesses and influencers must adapt their strategies to thrive in the changing landscape of social media. Check out some of the ways we think you can still capitalise on Instagram.

  • Authentic Content: One key strategy is to focus on creating authentic and engaging content that resonates with audiences. By prioritising quality over quantity and fostering genuine connections with followers, businesses and influencers can differentiate themselves in a crowded and competitive online space.

  • E-commerce Gold Mind: Try to leverage the platform’s e-commerce and shopping features to drive sales and conversions. With the increasing emphasis on social commerce, businesses can capitalise on Instagram’s visual appeal to showcase products and create seamless shopping experiences for users. Influencers, too, can partner with brands to promote shoppable content and provide their followers with curated recommendations and reviews.
  • Diversify: Diversifying the online presence beyond Instagram is essential for businesses and influencers to future-proof their digital strategies. Exploring emerging platforms and building a presence on multiple social media channels can help mitigate the risks associated with relying heavily on a single platform, while also providing opportunities to connect with new audiences and explore different content formats.

Is Instagram really dying?

Social media platforms are in a state of flux, with Instagram facing challenges and opportunities as they evolve to meet the changing needs and preferences of users, businesses, and influencers.

While the signs of Instagram’s decline are becoming more apparent, the platform’s response to these challenges and its efforts to revitalise its user experience will determine its future success.

As users, businesses, and influencers, we must adapt to the shifting social media landscape by prioritising authenticity, engaging with our audiences in meaningful ways, and exploring new opportunities offered by emerging platforms. By staying adaptable and open to change, we can navigate the uncertainties of the social media world and continue to thrive in the digital age.

I can’t sing the praises of Madhouse Media enough. So much so that I have recommended them to several friends and acquaintances who now all use Madhouse Media for their website or their social media and marketing. From start to finish they listened, offered help and guidance and found the right product/s I needed, without taking your eyes out like some other companies. The best thing you can do is make that first contact, after all, what have you got to lose? If they can help you they will give you all the options they can, if they can’t help you they’ll tell you and point you in the right direction. But if you don’t speak to them then you’ll never know. It’s the best decision I’ve made. My magazine now runs smoothly and with no hassle, any issues have been dealt with straight away. They have freed up my time to concentrate on other aspects and that has been perfect for me.Wayne. NE Online Magazine

I contacted madhouse media for 1000 flyers A5 single sided, however, they gave me a great deal for 5000 double sided. I sent the photos over to them along with my logo and information and they did the rest. There was a problem with the resolution of the logo I sent over so they redesigned it for me at a great price and it looks fantastic. They were in constant contact with me sending over initial drafts and final drafts and once the final draft was accepted the flyers were with me a couple days later. I will be using madhouse media Ltd again in the future for more flyers and business cards. Highly recommended!
